Gilberto reflects on Baptista saga

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

Gilberto was asked a few questions about the Baptista deal which eventually fell through, and he said this:

He [Baptista] is a good player. If the club had bought him he was going to be in as a striker, I think, from speaking to Arsene. It was a big miss but now we need to continue and forget about that. I think Arsenal will find some other player in the future.

That quote is about a week old, but the Gilberto news is slow, so nevermind.

Gilberto in Chelsea jibe

CHEEKY ARSENAL midfielder Gilberto has claimed watching Chelsea is just like a tennis match.

The Brazilian World Cup star is the latest in a string of Arsenal players who have backed their manager’s belief that the Gunners play the more attractive football.

Jose Mourinho’s men came off best in the Premiership encounter between the two teams two weeks ago, when striker Didier Drogba scored with his shin.

But Gilberto said last night: “Their style of play was strange, the long-ball tactic. It was difficult to understand and very frustrating to watch as well.

“At times it was like I was at a tennis match or something, I was just a spectator, my neck worked very hard that day.”

On one hand I think it’s best not to talk about Chelsea – but on the other hand, I love to see Gilberto talking about something other than how great Arsenal are. And he’s right.

Wenger: “Gilberto is a real leader”

Wednesday, August 24th, 2005

Wenger had a tiny bit to say about Gilberto in this article.

Wenger believes that Brazil international midfielder Gilberto is also a “real leader”, adding that “people underestimate his leadership qualities”.

Once Bergkamp retires, might Gilberto be vice captain?

I’d love to see it. Would you?

Gilberto picked for Brazil

Friday, August 19th, 2005

Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has named all his stars for the World Cup qualifier against Chile on September 4 and a friendly match against Spanish side Sevilla two days later.

The Barcelona star Ronaldinho is not in the list as he has to purge a one-match suspension in the qualifiers.

It is the same squad that drew 1-1 with Croatia in Split on Wednesday.

Brazil squad: Dida (AC Milan), Julio Cesar (Internazionale); Cafu (AC Milan), Cicinho (Sao Paulo), Roberto Carlos (Real Madrid), Gustavo Nery (Corinthians), Juan (Bayer Leverkusen), Luisao (Benfica), Alex (PSV Eindhoven), Lucio (Bayern Munich); Emerson (Juventus), Ze Roberto (Bayern Munich), Kaka (AC Milan), Ricardinho (Santos), Gilberto Silva (Arsenal), Renato (Sevilla), Julio Baptista (Real Madrid), Juninho Pernambucano (Lyon); Robinho, Ronaldo (both Real Madrid), Adriano (Internazionale), Ricardo Oliveira (Real Betis).

Brazil cross Gilberto off the team sheet

Wednesday, August 17th, 2005

Gilberto Silva wasn’t even picked for the Brasil SUBS BENCH for the international friendly game against Croatia.
Out of 16 Brasilians to pick, Silva wasn’t one of them. Outrageous.
I, personally, am very offended by this, and will be doing my utmost to see that everybody ignores me, since I am not a international football manager.
Brasil drew 1-1 in the end, probably because Silva wasn’t playing.

Brasil started with Emerson and Zé Roberto in the middle of the park. That’s strange, because Silva is meant to be 100% fit.

Anyway. Gilberto will fly back to England tomorow – hopefully as refreshed as a fresh Brasilian flying home after not playing for Brasil. At least he won’t have picked up any injuries for the Chelsea vs. Arsenal game. Arsenal are going to need Gilberto if they are to soak up the Chelsea attack effectively. Arsenals first big crunch game of the season is drawing near, and Gilberto Silva will certainly not be missed off the team sheet.

Unlucky, Brasil. Croatia are a good side. No really! I’m not joking. They play Srna in midfield. Gasp.

Friendly: Croatia vs. Brazil – preview

Tuesday, August 16th, 2005

sambafoot.com has previewed Brasil’s friendly game against Croatia on Wednesday.

“The Seleção arrives in Croatia”.

The Brazilian national Team flew away Sunday for Split where it will face next Wednesday in Poljud Stadium, Croatia.

The single absence is the left back Gilberto, who is injured. Carlos Alberto Parreira called upon the Corinthians defender Gustavo Nery as replacement.

The national technician will be able to count on the return of the World Cup winners Cafu, Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos, who did not take part in the Confederations Cup gained last June in Germany.

It should also be noted that captain Cafu will be playing his 140th match for Brazil. This friendly match will be used as preparation for the next qualification game against Chile, September 4 in Brasilia.

The 22 players

Goalkeepers

Dida (Milan)
Júlio César (Inter Milan)

Defenders

Cafu (Milan)
Roberto Carlos (Real Madrid)
Cicinho (São Paulo)
Gilberto (Hertha Berlin)
Lúcio (Bayern Munchen)
Juan (Bayer Leverkusen)
Luisão (Benfica)
Alex (PSV Eindhoven)

Midfielders

Emerson (Juventus)
Gilberto Silva (Arsenal)
Zé Roberto (Bayern Munchen)
Kaká (Milan)
Juninho Pernambucano (Lyon)
Renato (FC Sevilla)
Ricardinho (Santos)
Júlio Baptista (Real Madrid)

Forwards

Ronaldo (Real Madrid)
Adriano (Inter Milan)
Robinho (Santos)
Ricardo Oliveira (Bétis)

It’s good to see that Gilberto is playing for Brasil – but an international game, only FOUR days into the premiership season? It is a bit much for a player, considering the long flight to-and-from England.

It is quite likely that Gilberto will partner Emerson in the midfield at the start of the game.

After the game is played, information on Gilberto and Brasil will be available in this same ‘Brasil’ sub forum.

Good luck to Gilberto against Croatia!

Gilberto plays 90 minutes against Newcastle

Gilberto plays 90 minutes against Newcastle

Gilberto played the whole game for Arsenal on Sunday August 14th, and considering he’d only played half of the Chelsea match in pre-season, that was impressive.

He played the midfield distributor role as Vieira used to, and did his normal defensive duties.
He only made one dodgy pass, and I think he made a few good dribbles forward in midfield.
I’d rate it a solid 7/10 performance.

He was also on the end of a terrible tackle from Jermaine Jenas, as pictured below (Gilberto is on the left):

Bert gets hacked

He wasn’t badly injured, but he spent 5 minutes off the pitch limping. Hopefully no long term damage was done.

Tomorrow he travels to Croatia with Brazil – I hope he doesn’t get too tired.

What did you think of his performance?

Wenger: Gilberto might be available for Newcastle

Friday, August 12th, 2005

Journalist: “Will Gilberto play against Newcastle?”
Wenger: “He might be available”.

Well, that’s all the information we have about Gilberto’s status for the Newcastle game this Sunday.

Since he looked fit against Chelsea, there is a good chance that he’ll at least make the bench. Fabregas and Flamini are the two likely starters in midfielder, because Gilberto is probably only 90% fit, and he has a midweek international game with Brasil, where he travels to Croatia.

More news as soon as it is known.

Gilberto: “Could finish my career in Brazil”

Wednesday, August 10th, 2005

After his comments about his contract renewal earlier this week, Gilberto said the following to Gazeta Esportiva (Brazilian Newspaper):

“What I want is to improve each season that I play. It could happen that I return to Brazil to finish my career, but the most important thing would be that I would return having learned something new.”

Interesting.

Gilberto interview on 05/06 season

Wednesday, August 10th, 2005

Taken from The Islington Gazette

LOSING does not come naturally to Gilberto Silva, but it is not something the Gunners midfielder is planning on getting used to in the coming months.

Having missed all the pre-season friendlies, Arsenal’s Brazilian midfielder replaced Mathieu Flamini at half time in the Charity Shield, and made an immediate impression.

With Patrick Vieira gone, Gilberto is set to shoulder the defensive burden in midfield and, as the 28-year-old told the Gazette after Sunday’s game, he is ready for that extra responsibility.

“We have to learn how to play without Patrick,” said Gilberto. “We know how important he was for us, but it is a definite situation – he is definitely gone and we have to adapt.

“The young players are good players, they showed that last season and on Sunday. Cesc and Flamini are good players and I will be there to support them, to help them and push them up, that is my job. It’s a bigger responsibility for me but I take it.”

There is little doubt that Gilberto will be a key player this season.

While he was injured from September to April last season, Arsenal struggled even with Vieira still in the side.

Now the former captain has gone there is a definite shortage of experienced players who can play in the centre of midfield. In fact, with Edu having also moved on in the summer, Gilberto is the only one.

The Arsenal fans seemed to finally realise his value last season, but Arsene Wenger has never doubted it.

That is why he thrust Gilberto into action on Sunday despite the fact that the player had no competitive action under his belt in pre-season.

Because of his involvement in the Confederations Cup tournament with Brazil Gilberto only joined up with the Gunners towards the end of their tour of Austria.

Wenger decided he was not fit enough to play in Amsterdam at the start of the month either, but even after just 45 minutes of action Gilberto is confident he will be ready for the big kick-off.

“I am not one hundred per cent physically but I can get that this week. I hope to be totally fit by the time we play Newcastle and to play the whole game,” Gilberto revealed.

“When you are a bit more experienced you can play a bit more with your mind if you are not fully fit and that’s what I did.

‘We played well and we had a lot of possession but Chelsea had two or three shots and scored two goals. But the team have done well and we will be better against Newcastle.”

And Gilberto is adamant that the Gunners will be challenging for the major honours again this season, despite the sale of Vieira and the lack of any replacement.

“We have to see before the window closes but if no one comes to join us we will need to do with what we have,” he added.

“Some players have left us but I tell you we still have a good team with experienced players.

“It is up to all of us to be together and we have always had that unity since I have been here.

“This season it is going to be different but we still have that unity and that strength.”

“We want to bring the trophy back to Highbury but Chelsea want to win it and Liverpool and Manchester United too.

“There will be four teams so it’s a big challenge but I want us to be in front – it’s what we all expect this season, to come first.”

This season you feel a fit Gilberto is going to be crucial to that aim.
