Gilberto to play in Copa America

Just as I said that Gilberto might get a summer of rest – Brazil coach Dunga (the legend) – called on Gilberto to play in the Copa America 2007. The tournament takes place in Venezuela this year, and happens during the months of June and July.

So, let’s look at Gilberto’s summer schedule:

June 2: Play for Brazil in opening game at Wembley Stadium against England

June 26 til July 15: Copa America with Brazil in Venezuela

July 14 til July 29: Pre-season Arsenal friendly games at Ashburton Grove

August 2 – August 4: Pre-season friendly tournament with Arsenal in Amsterdam

And then… August sees the start of the new Premiership season.

So, another summer of laying back drinking caiprinhas! …Or not.

Good luck, Bert. You’ll need it.

Gilberto and Ronaldinho to face England

Brazil coach Dunga has selected a strong squad to take on England in the first full international to be played at the new Wembley Stadium.

Barcelona forward Ronaldinho and Arsenal legend* Gilberto are among 22 players picked for the 1 June friendly.

Both players have withdrawn from the Copa America, which starts on 26 June, because of tiredness.

Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva is the only English-based player in Brazil’s squad.

Go Bert!

Gilberto scores against Chelsea

Gilberto scored a penalty against Chelsea!

Nice.

Gilberto has now scored ELEVEN goals this season. That is one less than Thierry Henry, and three away from being Arsenal’s top scorer for the whole season. Not bad!

Even though he has most of his goals from penalties, I think Bert should be Arsenal’s player of the season. He has been captain for most games, since Thierry has been injured. He has scored vital goals. Taken leadership of the team. Played extremely well… consistently.

Gilberto’s last game of the season for Arsenal will be against Portsmouth on May the 13th. This will be the last game he plays before he jets off back to Brazil for a (hopefully) quiet summer.

Gilberto, despite Arsenal’s trophiless season, you have earnt your break! Well played, that man.
